“The Music of Woody Shaw”: Glenn Holmes Quartet ft. Mike Wade All-star lineup brings a hard-swingin' tribute to one of the most gifted & innovative jazz musicians of his generation - Woody Shaw, in BLU debut! Featuring Glenn Holmes, Drene Ivy, Johnny Cochran, Paul Samuels, and special guest artist, Mike Wade.

Thursday, March 24

Trumpeter Woody Shaw was one of the most prolific innovators on the jazz scene in the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s. Building upon the influences of such artists as Louis Armstrong and Harry James as well as Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, Kenny Dorham, Booker Little, Lee Morgan, and others, Shaw’s unique approach to improvisation and the trumpet paved the way to the rise of “Young Lion” acoustic post-bop jazz that emerged in the late 80’s, including Wynton Marsalis.

Shaw saw many fruitful collaborations both creatively and commercially during his comparatively short professional career with artists such as Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke, Johny Griffin, Horace Silver, Chick Corea, Jackie McLean, McCoy Tyner, Max Roach, Gary Bartz, Pharoah Sanders, Hank Mobley, and Archie Shepp to name a few. The 1980’s saw the release of several compelling albums in which Shaw was paired up with fellow trumpet innovator, Freddie Hubbard: Time Speaks (1982), Double Take (1985), and Eternal Triangle (1988).
