Red Light Roxy Jump blues, swing jazz and boogie-woogie masters, Red Light Roxy, make a roarin' return to BLU! Featuring Eileen Burns, Demetrius Steinmetz, Joe Hunter, Dave Sterner, Daris Adkins, & Holbrook Riles III.

Friday, March 4

Comprised of some of the very best musicians in Ohio, Red Light Roxy hails from Cleveland and plays an upbeat mix of jazz standards, jump blues, swing, boogie-woogie and a dash of old-school R&B. Its repertoire comes from the Great American Songbook and includes familiar songs made famous by such legendary performers as Ella Fitzgerald, Ruth Brown, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong.

Red Light Roxy has played at BLU Jazz+, the Tri-C JazzFest, Wade Oval Wednesdays, Cain Park, Akron’s Lock 4, the Shaker Heights Art and Music Festival, Nighttown, Legacy Village and a variety of city summer concerts and swing dances, as well as private events.

What does the band’s name mean?

The Roxy Theater was a famous (some might say notorious) burlesque house on the famed Short Vincent Avenue, the hub of Cleveland’s nightlife and jazz scene in the 30s, 40s and 50s. Short Vincent was the place where lawyers, politicians and everyday citizens mingled with gangsters, gamblers, showgirls and celebrities. Strip clubs in the “red light” districts in those days always had live musicians and many great jazz players got their start playing for “girlie shows.” The band likes to think that they embody the spirit and energy of Short Vincent in its heyday (minus the nudity and mafiosos).
