About Liz Woolley

Liz Woolley began her musical studies at the age of 6, when her mother began to teach her piano lessons. She progressed in her piano studies until the age of 13, when she took a brief hiatus to focus on vocal musical endeavors. She participated in many school choirs and was involved in musical productions in high school, where she played the role of Phyllis Dale in the musical “42nd Street” and learned a bit in the art of tap dancing.

Following high school, Liz attended Snow College, majoring in piano performance and studying with Dr. Vedrana Subotic. After her first year, she participated in the first annual “Juilliard Faculty Goes to the Mountains” rhythm section workshop, working with Carl Allen and getting her first real taste of jazz music. She joined the jazz band the next year as pianist and lead jazz vocalist. She performed in Rochester, New York that spring with Snow College’s traveling ensembles. That year she won the Concerto Competition and performed Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 in g minor, III mvt with the Snow College Symphony Orchestra. That summer she attended the Juilliard Rhythm Section workshop again, working closely with Ted Rosenthal who called her a triple threat – singer, classical pianist, and jazz pianist.

She also traveled to northern Italy with Snow College’s traveling ensembles the following year, playing the Mendelssohn Piano Trio in D minor as well as her original jazz tune, “Apple of My Eye”. She continued her piano and jazz studies at the University of Utah. During that time she toured Singapore and played for the United States embassy at the Esplanade.

She later continued to Utah State University where she began a degree in music therapy, studying with Maureen Hearns, MA, MT-BC, FAMI and Letha Mark, BMT, MT-BC. After several practicums with varying populations, Liz developed a love and passion for the profession of music therapy. She has been participating in an internship at Helping Hands Center for Special Needs in Columbus, OH, serving children with autism.

When Liz Woolley moved to Logan, UT she began to play with two bluegrass groups. The Pretty Darns, a bluegrass trio of women, had Liz playing mandolin and writing half the group’s original songs. They toured throughout the south and played a show at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA. After several years of playing all over the country and locally in Utah, the Pretty Darns disbanded.

Around the same time The Pretty Darns formed, another bluegrass group emerged in Logan, UT: A traditional five string bluegrass group known as the Dry Lake Band. The band recorded two full length albums, “Dry Lake Band” which was released in the summer of 2010 and “Live in Studio” which was released in 2012 and includes two original tracks by Liz. They are both available on iTunes. The band also recorded a three track EP entitled “Ramblin Man”; the title track was written by Liz.

Liz is continually writing tunes, whether it is in the style of jazz, bluegrass, folk, pop or for music therapy. Liz has also sang on several recordings, most notably for hip hop artist J Mac and rock band Uncle Boaz. She has also appeared in commercials for iFrogz and Instructure Canvas. Liz has loved singing with her sister Christina throughout the years and the pair released their first album, “Sister Summer”, in the summer of 2012. She continues to play jazz gigs with various rhythm sections in whichever city she finds herself.
