BLU Jazz+ Student All-Stars Concert Series presents: Youngstown State University Jazz Guitar Studio Join us at BLU Jazz+ as we feature our area's top high school & collegiate jazz programs in a special concert series! This showcase will include performances by talented groups from the jazz guitar studio of Youngstown State University under the direction of Francois Fowler!

Presented by the BLU Jazz+ Masterclass Foundation, our 3rd annual BLU Jazz+ Student All-Stars Concert Series continues as we feature the talented student ensembles from the Youngstown State University jazz guitar studio, under the direction of Francois Fowler! Proceeds from this event are split between Youngstown State University’s jazz program and the BLU Jazz+ Masterclass Foundation, so bring your friends and family out and show your support for these awesome local groups! Be sure to stick around after the concert for very special concert appearance at 9PM featuring international jazz guitarist sensation, Peter Bernstein!
 
Featured student musicians include Anthony Kunovic, Nicholas Frank, Nicholas Jones, Alex Ayers, Justin Randall, Ian Kinnaman, Zach Connely, Jesse DeLorenzo, Herbie Hunkele, Alex Miller, and Sam Gregory.
 


 

About Francois Fowler

Guitarist Francois Fowler has given recitals in the United States, Canada and Mexico, including concerts in Albany, Auburn, Cleveland, Columbus (OH), Columbus (GA), Dayton, Denver, Grand Rapids, Hagerstown, Hartford, Jekyll Island, Kennesaw, Los Angeles, Montréal, Monterrey, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Rochester, San Jose, Sauble Beach, Seattle, Spartanburg, Springfield, Syracuse, Tallahassee, Tampa, Tifton, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and Youngstown. Fowler is the recipient of national and international prizes including finalist in the 2001 Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) International Guitar Competition. A faculty member at the Dana School of Music (Youngstown State University, Ohio), he maintains an active guitar studio and coaches guitar ensembles. Fowler obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Ottawa, Canada, where he studied with Ed Honeywell, and his Doctorate from Florida State University where he was a teaching assistant to the renowned pedagogue, Professor Bruce Holzman. Francois performs on a Thomas Humphrey guitar with D’Addario Strings, his compositions and arrangements are published by Clear Note Publications, and his recordings are released by CBC records, Canadian Music Center, Clear Note, Novalis, and independently. His latest CD Sonata features music by C.P.E. Bach, J.S. Bach, Agustin Barrios, Gregorio Huet, and Domenico Scarlatti. Fowler is also a founding member of the flute and guitar duo, Duo Allant, with Kathryn Thomas Umble.

Committed to the preservation of America’s treasured art form of jazz, BLU Jazz+ Masterclass Foundation (BJMF) is a new program developed by the founders of BLU Jazz+ Akron (BJA) that brings “front-row” jazz education performance & mentorship opportunities to student musicians and art lovers alike by presenting a series of masterclasses led by top visiting musicians from all over the world.
 
Recipient of a 2015 Knights Art Challenge grant award by the Knight Foundation, BLU Jazz+ Masterclass Foundation expands upon the essence of Akron, Ohio’s award-winning live jazz destination, BLU Jazz+ Akron (BJA), launched in Fall 2014.
